World No. 210 Robert Farah caused a shock at the BMW Open in Munich by eliminating seventh seed Nikolay Davydenko.

Canada's Farah, who reached the third round in Barcelona last week before losing to eventual winner Rafael Nadal, strolled to a 6-3 6-2 success in one hour and 22 minutes.

Davydenko, the defending champion at the event, won just five points on his second serve as Farah claimed four breaks, and gave away nothing on his own delivery.

Marcos Baghdatis got his clay-court season up and running with victory over Tobias Kamke. Eighth seed Baghdatis lost in the opening round in Bucharest last month, but a 6-1 3-6 6-3 victory over Kamke gave him his first clay success of 2012.

Davydenko was the only seed to succumb on Tuesday, as Mikhail Youzhny successfully negotiated a tricky tie against Philipp Petzschner, eventually winning 7-5 7-5. There were also wins for Dustin Brown, Ernests Gulbis (over Xavier Malisse), Pablo Starace and Sergiy Stakhovsky - who lost against Andy Murray last week.

At the Estoril Open, seeds Fabio Cipolla and Albert Montanes both lived up to their billing with first round victories.

There were a couple of surprises at the Serbia Open, however, as sixth seed Fabio Fognini and seventh seed Ryan Harrison were both dumped out in straight sets. Eighth seed Gilles Muller narrowly avoided the same fate, eventually trumping Lukas Lacko 6-0 4-6 6-3.
