Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's French Open preparations suffered a considerable setback as the world No. 5 was dumped out in straight sets by German veteran Tommy Haas at the BMW Open in Munich.

Tsonga, who has never won a title on clay, was making his debut at the event. Having received a bye into the second round, the Frenchman's campaign lasted less than an hour as he was outclassed by the world No. 134, who claimed a 6-1 6-4 victory.

Tsonga failed to make an impact against the home favourite and never created a single break point opportunity against the 34-year-old.

Meanwhile, third seed Marin Cilic cruised past Germany's Matthias Bachinger 6-3 6-2, while Marcos Baghdatis came from a set down to beat Dustin Brown 1-6 6-4 6-1.

Sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny survived a tricky test to progress past Colombian Santiago Giraldo. The Russian battled from a set down to claim a 6-7(2) 6-4 6-4 victory.

Meanwhile at the Estoril Open in Portugal, second seed Richard Gasquet cruised past Paolo Lorenzi 6-1-6-1. Stanislas Wawrinka will meet Robin Haase in the quarter-finals after the pair won their respective matches.
