David Nalbandian booked a second-round clash with Andy Murray at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia with 6-3 6-4 win over Albert Ramos.

The Argentinian is down at 42 in the world, having been as high as No. 3 in 2006, but he still carries a threat and it will be a test for Murray who will return to action in Rome following a couple of weeks off on account of injury.

Bernard Tomic lost the opening set to Colombian Santiago Giraldo but battled back to claim a 4-6 6-2 6-4 victory to set up a second-round encounter with top seed Novak Djokovic.

Gael Monfils easily beat Alex Bogomolov Jr in straight sets to book a showdown with world No. 2 Roger Federer. Monfils needed less than an hour and 20 minutes to seal a 6-4 6-1 win over the Russian.

Fernando Verdasco eased into the second round after Alexandr Dolgopolov retired after failing to win a single game in the opening set. Dolgopolov, who was struggling with illness over the weekend, looked fatigued as Verdasco sailed through the opening set.

Fabio Fognini justified his wildcard with a 6-2 6-2 win over Marcos Baghdatis, while Stanislas Wawrinka needed three sets to see off Robin Haase.

World No. 10 John Isner rallied from losing the first set to beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 2-6 7-6(3) 6-2, while Nicolas Almagro dominated the final set with Marin Cilic to win 6-2 3-6 6-0.
