Victoria Azarenka's participation in the French Open has been thrown into doubt after the world No. 1 pulled out of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia with a shoulder injury.

Azarenka picked up the problem on Wednesday, but despite thrashing Shahar Peer 6-1 6-2, she felt unable to continue in Rome and handed a walkover to her third-round opponent Dominika Cibulkova, who progresses to the quarter-finals.

With the French Open less than two weeks away, the extent of Azarenka's injury is yet to be revealed, but the Belarusian is set to undergo treatment in a bid to alleviate the problem.

After winning the Australian Open in January, Azarenka will be bidding to add a second grand slam to her trophy cabinet when the Roland Garros event kicks off on May 27.

It comes after former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki sparked fears over her fitness after she was forced to withdraw from her second round match with Anabel Medina Garrigues.
