Murray looks sharp in loss to Gulbis

Andy Murray appeared to dispel any fitness fears ahead of the French Open, despite losing to Ernests Gulbis in the Guinot Mary-Cohr exhibition event.

Played at the Paris Golf and Country Club, it is an event popular with players keen to get some match practice on clay in a relaxed atmosphere.

Murray came into his match with Gulbis with Boris Becker urging him to consider skipping Roland Garros on account of a back problem that has been troubling him all season.

He came off second best against Gulbis, but the Latvian is a tricky customer and Murray matched him all the way - only losing out in two tiebreaks.

"I feel better than I did a few weeks ago," Murray told the Independent. "I need to get some matches and some good practice under my belt. I've also done some good work in the gym as well to try to strengthen some things."

The British No.1 did not look restricted in his movement and although he was beaten, Murray is likely to head to Roland Garros buoyed by two hours' practice under his belt.
