Second seed Maria Sharapova did not drop a game as she outclassed Alexandra Cadantu to reach the second round of the French Open after a light workout on Tuesday morning.
In a match that lasted 48 minutes, Sharapova proved far too good for her Romanian opponent as she appeared superior in every facet of the game to clinch a 6-0 6-0 win.
Cadantu, the world No. 75, probably did not deserve to be defeated without winning a game considering she sparked a number of classy rallies against her vaunted opponent, but it always seemed to be the Russian - one of the favourites for victory at Roland Garros - who struck the decisive blow.
First on court on Tuesday, reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova also showed her class as she defeated the reigning junior champion at the All England Club, Ashleigh Barty, 6-1 6-2.
Australian Barty, a 16-year-old making one of her first forays into the senior ranks, showed glimpses of fighting spirit in trying to probe her opponent with attempted winners in the early part of the contest, but Kvitova looked a cut above throughout as her greater range of shots and superior precision quickly left Barty demoralised.
Caroline Woznaicki was another comfortable winner, beating Eleni Daniilidou 6-0 6-1. Wozniacki broke five times in the contest.
Elsewhere, there was a victory for Francesca Schiavone over Kimiko Date-Krumm, as the 14th seed won 6-3 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier. Klara Zakopalova is also into the second round, after she bested Lesia Tsurenko 6-2 6-1.
Other names to advance included 16th seed Maria Kirilenko, 22nd seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and 23rd seed Kaia Kanepi.
