Andy Murray has reacted angrily to Virginia Wade, the 1977 Wimbledon champion, calling him a "drama queen" during his match against Jarkko Nieminen at the French Open on Thursday.

Murray showed the effects of a back injury as he laboured past Nieminen 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2; at one point he was struggling to complete his service action and it seemed he would not be able to finish the match.

After the second-round contest Murray revealed his team urged him to pull out in order to preserve his body - but he played on, and feels that Wade should have given him more credit for doing so.

"That's quite disappointing, to be honest," Murray said. "You have people who always have to come out and say something controversial. They should be supportive, or maybe ask me first.

"I have known Virginia since I was a young kid, she used to coach with my mum so, to me, that's quite disappointing. She has no idea what I was feeling in the court. I don't really see what the point would be in play-acting."
