Jamie Baker defeated world No. 50 Donald Young in straight sets at the AEGON International on Monday to give himself a big boost ahead of Wimbledon.

Baker, currently 200th in the world rankings, moved into the ascendancy early in Eastbourne against his more illustrious opponent, and then survived a tumultuous second set to close out an eventual 6-1 6-4 victory in the first round match.

Young, who has beaten Andy Murray in the past, was outplayed in the opening set but fought back in the second - but Baker edged the five breaks of the serve during the stanza to eventually serve out the contest.

Marinko Matosevic ended wildcard James Ward's bid at the first hurdle, fighting back from a set down to dump out the Brit 4-6 6-1 6-4.

Elsewhere at the event, there were wins for Ryan Harrison, Carlos Berlocq and Marcos Baghdatis - who defeated eighth seed Pablo Andujar.
