Nalbandian slapped with maximum fine

David Nalbandian has been fined £8,000 after kicking an advertising box and injuring a line judge during the AEGON Championships final at Queen's.

Nalbandian was leading Marin Cilic by a set when, having just gone behind 3-4 in the second, he vented his frustration by kicking an advertising hoarding surrounding Andrew McDougall's chair, which smashed into the line judge's shin and caused a nasty-looking gash.

The Argentine was subsequently disqualified from Sunday's showpiece, leaving Cilic to be declared the winner.

Nalbandian lost his £36,500 prize money as a result of the incident and the ATP has issued him with the maximum fine of €10,000 (£8,000) for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

An ATP spokeswoman said: "Nalbandian automatically forfeited his prize money and ranking points due to his conduct default.

"A maximum €10,000 fine also was issued onsite by the ATP supervisor for unsportsmanlike conduct."

Police confirmed on Monday that they are investigating a complaint of alleged assault against Nalbandian, who immediately offered an apology after injuring McDougall.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "We are aware of an incident at the AEGON Championships on June 17. A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. The allegation is of assault."
