One win, nine losses for Brits in Wimbledon qualifying

Lisa Whybourn was the only one of ten British players to secure a singles victory in Wimbledon qualifying on Tuesday.

Whybourn saw off Germany's Sarah Gronert 6-1 4-6 6-4, and is now one triumph away from a place in the main draw of the grass-court grand slam.

"I love playing here and feel really comfortable," Whybourn said to wimbledon.com. "It's a great opportunity for us being in our country that we get wild cards, especially the last month where we've all had some career-best wins against people in the top 100. So we show we can compete at that level … and hopefully build on it."

In the other women's action involving Brits, Tara Moore was a set and 5-2 up against Erika Sema, but was unable to close out the victory, and eventually lost 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4.

Melanie South was no match for No. 11 seed Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, losing 6-3 6-2, while Anna Fitzpatrick ran out of steam towards the end of a 6-3 4-6 6-2 defeat to Kristina Mladenovic. Samantha Murray was another who lost in three.

Jade Windley and Katy Dunne suffered resounding straight-sets losses against Marta Sirotkina and Maria Elena Camerin respectively. Emily Webley-Smith went down 6-3 6-3 to Camila Giorgi.

In the men's singles, top seed Jurgen Zopp was too much for Chris Eaton who, despite giving a fine account of himself against an opponent ranked over 400 places higher, couldn't prevent a 7-6 7-6 defeat. And Kyle Edmund lost to Marcel Felder 0-6 7-6 6-2.
