Lukas Rosol pulled off one of the biggest upsets in grand slam history as the world No. 100 dumped two-time champion Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon.

The 11-time grand slam champion suffered a shock second-round exit as Rosol kept his cool to claim a 6-7(9) 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4 victory.

Nadal was some way off his best as he allowed an early break to slip from his grasp. However, when the Spaniard ground his way through the tiebreak, it looked like it would shatter Rosol's resistance.

But the world No. 100 refused to allow his opponent to have things all his way as the Czech grabbed an early break in the second set and served immaculately to level proceedings. Nadal was unable to dictate rallies from the baseline and when his forehand found the net, Rosol had another break - and he showed nerves of steel to move within one set of the third round.

Nadal, who has not fallen before the fourth round at a grand slam since 2005, was never going to roll over without a fight, and when Rosol's forehand flew long, Nadal had the break he so desperately craved. With darkness closing in on Centre Court, the No. 2 seed was in no mood to hang around, and some superb defence made way for a double break, Nadal roaring with delight after forcing a decider.

But with the momentum firmly in Nadal's favour, the Spaniard was halted firmly in his tracks as officials decided to shut the roof to allow play to continue under the lights. After a half-hour delay, the players returned and it was Rosol who started the brighter, breaking Nadal on his opening service game to move within touching distance of an unlikely victory. In what was undoubtedly the biggest moment of his career, he showed no signs of nerves as he fired his 22nd ace of the match to complete an historic victory.

Rosol will now face Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round after the German defeated Tunisia's Malek Jaziri 6-1 7-6(2) 6-1, while the draw has opened up for British No. 1 Andy Murray, who was seeded to face Nadal in the semi-finals. Murray beat Ivo Karlovic in four sets earlier on Thursday.

Last year's semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga survived a scare as he was forced to battle from a set down to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-7(3) 6-4 6-1 6-3, while Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Go Soeda 6-2 6-3 1-6 6-4 to set up a third-round clash with Kei Nishikori.

Andy Roddick, a three-time finalist at the All England Club, defeated Bjorn Phau 6-3 7-6(1) 6-3 to set up a mouth-watering third-round clash with No. 7 seed David Ferrer, who defied the big-serving Kenny de Schepper 7-6(1) 6-2 6-4.

Queen's champion Marin Cilic will have the benefit of an extra day's rest ahead of his next match after he saw off Lukasz Kubot. However, his third round opponent will have to return to court on Friday, with Milos Raonic's clash with Sam Querrey suspended due to bad light with the match in the balance at 3-3 in the third set.

David Goffin, a surprise package at the French Open last month, continued his impressive run of form to beat Jesse Levine, while there were wins for Benoit Paire, Brian Baker and Lukas Lacko.

On the other side of the draw, Radek Stepanek saw off Benjamin Becker to set up a third round clash with top seed Novak Djokovic, while Fernando Verdasco defeated Grega Zemjla. The Spaniard will now meet Xavier Malisse, who knocked out No. 13 seed Gilles Simon.
