What They Said

Roger Federer took a step closer to a seventh Wimbledon title as he breezed past Mikhail Youzhny to reach the semi-finals at the All England Club for an eighth time.

The world No. 3, who is looking to reclaim the title he last won in 2009, looked to have regained his best form as he eased to a 6-1 6-2 6-2 victory on Centre Court.

Federer had been stretched to five sets by Julien Benneteau and struggled with a back injury during his fourth-round match against Xavier Malisse, but showed no signs of injury as he dominated the match from the outset.

Youzhny had never beaten Federer in 13 previous encounters, and there appeared to be little chance of ending that streak when Federer wrestled an early break in a lengthy second game before holding serve in just 43 seconds for a 3-0 lead.

It set the tone for the match as Youzhny, playing in his first Wimbledon quarter-final, was never allowed to settle as Federer gave a majestic performance in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Russian saved three match points at 5-1 down, but the result was never in doubt and Federer sealed the victory with an exquisite volley.

Next up for the Swiss is defending champion Novak Djokovic, who saw off Florian Mayer in straight sets. Federer leads the head-to-head 14-12, but the pair have never played on grass.
