Robson makes breakthrough in Palermo
Laura Robson continued her sparkling form at the Italia Open as she defeated Carla Suarez Navarro to reach her first WTA semi-final.
The 18-year-old, who upset second seed Roberta Vinci on Thursday, got the better of another clay court specialist as she claimed a 6-4 2-6 6-3 victory in Sicily.
Robson struggled with her serve, hitting nine double faults and succeeding with just 54 per cent of her first serves, but her clean powerful shots from the baseline was enough to secure a hard-earned victory against a player ranked more than 70 places above her.
Suarez Navarro's clay court guile looked like it would be enough as she took an early lead, breaking in the third game, but Robson bounced back with an immediate response before breaking the Spaniard in her final service game to snatch the opening set.
Robson's erratic serving proved costly in the second set as six double faults and a single point won on her second serve allowed Suarez Navarro to level the match.
Although the British No. 4 wobbled after breaking for a 4-2 lead in the decider, she made no mistake at the second time of asking, breaking once again for a 5-3 lead before wrapping up the match in a shade over two hours.
Robson will face eighth seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the last four after the Czech defeated third seed Julia Goerges 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 6-1.
