Serena Williams' recent run of fine form carried on in California on Saturday as she breezed past Sorana Cirstea and into the final of the Bank of the West Classic.

In her first tournament since winning Wimbledon, Williams has not dropped a set and looked in menacing form against Cirsta, recording a 6-1 6-2 victory. Indeed, Williams required just 60 minutes to win the semi-final as Cirstea failed to adequately combat the American's heavy grounstrokes.

Williams claimed victory on the back of a strong service game, losing 12 points on serve during the encounter. Cirstea, though, lacked the power on second serve to trouble Williams, allowing the defending champion to gain an advantage early on.

In total, Williams broke Cirstea five times to set up a final showdown with home favourite Coco Vandeweghe, who upset fifth seed Yanina Wickmayer.

Vandeweghe claimed a hard-fought 6-2 3-6 6-2 win, as both players battled it out at Stanford University for over two hours. It was Vandeweghe's 12 aces which proved the difference in the final set , with a tiring Wickmayer unable to return the powerful delivery.
