Roddick eases into Atlanta quarter-finals

Olympic hopeful Andy Roddick progressed to the quarter-finals of the Atlanta Open with a straight-sets triumph over Nicolas Mahut.

Roddick was forced to wait four hours due to a rain delay before claiming a 7-6(4) 6-3 win on Wednesday evening. The victory handed Roddick some form of revenge against Mahut, who knocked the American out of the French Open earlier this year.

The turning point for Roddick was a mini-break in the ninth point of the first-set tiebreaker, which saw the fourth seed gain the upper hand. Roddick surged ahead early in the second set and never looked troubled from that moment on.

Roddick will take on fifth seed Kevin Anderson in the quarters, after he dispatched home favourite Michael Russell in three tight sets. South African Anderson ultimately prevailed 6(5)-7 6-4 6-4.

At the German Tennis Championships, Gilles Simon's Olympic preparations took a hit as he lost to wildcard Tommy Haas. Simon was seeded second in Hamburg, but he was outgunned in a real slugfest by Haas as the German veteran triumphed 4-6 6-3 6-4.

Marin Cilic continues to look extremely impressive, however, defeating Federico Delbonis 6-3 6-2. Cilic won the Croatia Open last week and seems intent on back-to-back ATP Tour titles, taking 80 minutes to see off his third round rival.

And at the Suisse Open in Gstaad, home favourite Stanislas Wawrinka was shocked 7-6(3) 7-6(8) by Paul-Henri Mathieu. Wawrinka is another who will be heading to London, as will Mikhail Youzhny, who lost 4-6 6-2 6-4 to Thomaz Bellucci.
