Jankovic bundled out of Carlsbad quarters

Third seed Jelena Jankovic was sent crashing out of the Mercury Insurance Open in California after a shock loss to qualifier Yung-Jan Chan.

Jankovic spurned two match points against her Taiwanese opponent, and eventually paid the price in a 6-7(4) 7-6(8) 7-5 defeat. The hard-fought match saw the pair battle it out on court for three-hours and 13-minutes.

After losing the first-set tiebreaker, Chan required medical attention at 3-2 in the second set as she struggled to come to terms with the Carlsbad heat. World No. 161 Chan then rallied to save the two match points in a tense second-set tiebreaker to level matters.

The third set saw Chan fail to make the most of her opportunities as Jankovic clawed back to 5-all after Chan had won three consecutive games. Chan then held serve, before a wayward backhand from Jankovic sealed the result.

Marion Bartoli outlasted Christina McHale to progress to the semi-finals. The top seed ultimately prevailed 7-5 4-6 6-4 in just under three hours, despite serving 11 double faults.

Second seed Dominika Cibulkova won her match against Poland's Ursula Radwanska in straight sets 6-4 6-4. Cibulkova reached her second semi-final of the year where she will face fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova, who accounted for Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 2-6 7-6(5).

The rain has caused chaos at the Swedish Open, but event organisers got back on track with many players having to come through two matches.

Polona Hercog and Tsvetana Pironkova did not have to play two games and they served up a cracker, with Hercog rallying from a set down to claim a 3-6 7-5 6-4 success.

Two matches in a day held no terrors for Mathilde Johansson who after coming through a second-round game with Shahar Peer, disposed of No. 5 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-0.

Klara Zakopalova was not able to come through two matches as she retired after two games of her quarter-final clash with Johanna Larsson, while Mona Barthel was a 6-3 6-4 winner over Sofia Arvidsson.
