Rafael Nadal's participation at the 2012 US Open remains a source of doubt after he withdrew from the forthcoming Western & Southern Open tournament.

Nadal has not set foot on court since losing to Lukas Rosol in the third round at Wimbledon. Thursday's withdrawal extends that period still further.

The world No. 1 is troubled by the knee problem that has restricted previous sections of his career, and Nadal is clearly not prepared to rush his recovery. He has already missed this week's Rogers Cup and has now added the Western & Southern Open to that list.

Nadal tweeted: "I won't be playing at Cincinnati Open. I am still not ready to play. I have unforgettable moments in 2008. I am continuing with my recup."

The US Open begins on August 27.
