Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova claimed her first WTA title of the year with victory over Li Na at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Monday evening.

Kvitova, the fifth seed, endured a topsy-turvy battle with her Chinese opponent before closing out a 7-5 2-6 6-3 triumph. The win provided the 22-year-old with the eighth tournament trophy of her career.

"It is great to have a good result in the Montreal Cup before the US Open. Finally I have played well," Kvitova said. "It is a great preparation. I have played some good matches here and I hope that I can continue that."

Momentum swung wildly in the opening set, with 17 break points being presented in total during a nervy, error-prone exchange. Kvitova ultimately claimed the set at the fifth time of asking after 62 minutes.

Na, who fought back from 5-1 down in her semi-final against Lucie Safarova, was spurred on in the second set. The French Open winner broke Kvitova immediately before racing through to restore parity.

However, Kvitova struck decisively in the sixth game of the third, breaking Na to steal her way to a 4-2 lead. Three games later and Kvitova sealed victory with her first match point, securing her first tournament win on North American soil.

Victory is likely to see Kvitova move back into the world's top 5, while Na is left to rue her third final defeat of 2012 after losing the decider in Sydney and Rome previously.
