Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt has been handed a wildcard for the US Open.

Hewitt, who won the US Open in 2001, and American veteran James Blake were among eight wildcard entries named by the US Tennis Association.

Blake, who reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows in 2005 and 2006, is one of six American wildcards including US college champion Steve Johnson, Rajeev Ram, 2010 boys' champion Jack Sock, Denis Kudla and Dennis Novikov.

France's Guillaume Rufin, who reached the second round of Wimbledon and has reached a career-high ranking of No. 127, will also receive a wildcard.

The US Open takes place at Flushing Meadows between August 27 and September 9.
