Young snaps 17-match losing streak

Donald Young ended his miserable run of form as he progressed to the second round of the Winston Salem Open with victory over Leonardo Mayer.

The American looked to be on course for an 18th consecutive defeat after he lost the opening set, but showed impressive fight to battle back to claim a 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory in North Carolina - his first win since February.

Young looked to have finally begun to fulfil the potential he showed as a youngster as he began the year inside the world's top 40, but having won just two matches all season, he has slumped to No. 80, with 180 points to defend at the US Open after reaching the fourth round last season.

He will now face ninth seed Feliciano Lopez in the second round, while top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will face Thomaz Bellucci after Marcos Baghdatis retired hurt during their first-round clash.

In second-round action, fifth seed Andy Roddick edged past compatriot James Blake 7-6(6) 7-6(6). Both men had their serve broken once in the opening set, but Roddick's thunderous delivery proved the difference in each of the tiebreakers.

Tenth seed Viktor Troicki crashed out on Monday evening, though. The Serbian was outlasted by Belgium's David Goffin 3-6 6-4 7-5.
