Former US Open finalist Vera Zvonareva has pulled out of the US Open after failing to recover from a virus.

The Russian retired midway through her third round match with Kim Clijsters at Wimbledon with the illness before losing 6-0 6-1 to Serena Williams at London 2012.

Zvonareva, who was ranked at No. 2 in the world at the end of 2010 after reaching the Wimbledon and US Open finals, has slipped to 16th in the rankings.

Zvonareva's compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova, who won the US Open in 2004, will also miss the final major of the year with a knee injury.

Kaia Kanepi (Achilles), Flavia Pennetta (wrist) and Elena Baltacha (ankle) are also on the absent list.
