Laura Robson teed up a meeting with Kim Clijsters in the second round of the US Open when getting the better of Samantha Crawford.

Robson saw her friend Heather Watson bow out earlier in the day, but she ensured the British flag will fly in the second round with a battling win over Crawford.

Robson was up against a fellow teenager in Crawford, someone she had faced before at junior level.

Crawford has been described as the next Lindsay Davenport, which is a big billing for the American. Crawford proved that big-hitting is her forte with seven winners, but her attacking style did not faze Robson who produced a polished display by reining in the mistakes.

There were only two double faults and on the back of some impressive serving Robson was able to grind her opponent down.

Robson took the opening set with ease, but had to play catch-up in the second after falling 3-0 behind. She kept her composure to force a tiebreak and again battled back from a minibreak down to seal the win at the first time of asking.

Three-time US Open champion Clijsters opened up her final Flushing Meadows campaign with a 6-3 6-1 win over Victoria Duval. The Belgian, who is set to retire at the end of the tournament, made a slow start but steadily found her range and by the mid-way point of the second set she was crunching winners for fun.
