Andy Roddick has confirmed he will retire from tennis at the conclusion of the US Open.

It is nine years since the American lifted his solitary grand slam and he has elected to bow out at the scene of that triumph.

Roddick has been struggling with injuries for a couple of years, but he made a bright start to the tournament - taking out Rhyne Williams in straight sets.

He faces Bernard Tomic in the second round and has confirmed that if he is beaten, it will be his list competitive match.

Roddick turned 30 on Thursday and he called a press conference to announce that after a 13-year career that has brought 32 titles, he will bow out.

"I have decided this is my last tournament," Roddick said. "I don't know if I am healthy enough and good enough to go another year.

"I always wanted to finish at this event, I have thought all year I would know and in my first match I knew.

"With my body right know, I don't k now if I can compete. I am someone who has no interest in just existing on tour. I have a lot of other things that excite me and I am looking forward to them.

"These guys on tour are really, really good now. I had planned a shorter schedule next year but I don't think you can do that."
