Djokovic saunters past Dutra Silva

Novak Djokovic eased his way into the third round of the US Open with a 6-2 6-1 6-2 win over Rogerio Dutra Silva.

On a blisteringly hot day at Flushing Meadows, Djokvovic looked to be struggling in the heat but his opponent did not have enough class to take advantage and the defending champion eased through.

Dutra Silva was like a startled rabbit early on, as a blistering start from Djokovic took the first set away in rapid fashion. The Brazilian attempted to regroup at the start of the second and frustrated Djokovic when winning a 16-minute game.

However, he was serving again inside three minutes as Djokovic held in rapid fashion and it proved too much for Dutra Silva who surrendered his serve.

Dutra Silva continued to hit some quality shots, but they were few and far between and another break of serve earned Djokovic the second set.

The third set followed a similar pattern, with Dutra Silva hitting great winners - the most notable of which was a stunning forehand down the line - but he was let down by his lack of consistency as Djokovic cantered to victory.

David Ferrer has made quiet progress into round three and the Spanish No. 4 seed eased to a 6-2 6-3 7-6(12) win over Igor Sijsling.

Lleyton Hewitt put his battered body through the mill but emerged from his second-round clash with Gilles Muller with a five-set win. Hewitt served terribly, with his first-serve percentage below 50%, but his groundstrokes matched his desire and he battled all the way to claim 3-6 7-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 win. It was a contest that had everything, with the only disappointment being Muller served a double fault at match point down. Hewitt will face Ferrer in the third round.

Juan Martin Del Potro recovered from the shock of dropping the third set, having been in complete control, to topple Ryan Harrison in four sets. The No. 7 seed will face his fellow Argentina Leonardo Mayer who was a four-set winner over Tommy Robredo.

Stanislas Wawrinka and Steve Darcis also went five sets, with the former coming through 7-5 in the fifth set. It was a remarkable contest, with Darcis effectively playing at walking pace for the final two sets but it was only in the 12th game of the final set that Wawrinka got the job done.

Wawrinka, the 18th seed, will face Alexandr Dolgopolov in the third round following his 6-4 3-6 6-0 7-6(5) win over Marcos Baghdatis.

Steve Johnson thrilled the home crowd with a four-set win over Ernests Gulbis and he will tackle Richard Gasquet in the third round following his 6-3 6-3 6-1 win over Bradley Klahn.

Janko Tipsarevic looks a live threat and he booked his place in the third round with a professional 6-4 6-3 6-4 win over Brian Baker.

Ninth seed John Isner overcame a stiff challenge from Jarkko Nieminen to win in four sets. The American had to rely on 23 aces to defeat his Finnish opponent in their second-round clash.
