Roddick keeps career alive at US Open

Andy Roddick blasted his way into the third round of the US Open with a resounding 6-3 6-4 6-0 win over Bernard Tomic on Friday evening.

Roddick, who has announced he will retire after this tournament, played with ferocity and determination, never allowing his Australian opponent to settle. It was a convincing display from the American veteran, who finished the match in just 87 minutes.

The scene was set early in the first set as Roddick made an early break in the opening set. Tomic appeared unusually shaky on serve, and generally overawed by the occasion, failing push Roddick around the court.

Clearly looking to get on the front foot at every opportunity, Roddick sealed the first set on serve to surge to a commanding lead.

Games went with serve at the start of the second set, but it was the tempo and attitude of Roddick which shone through again as he made a crucial break of the Tomic delivery in the ninth game. He duly served out the set to leave Tomic dispondent.

The third set became a formality for Roddick, who carried on winning points in quick fashion. After breaking Tomic on numerous occasions, Roddick then served out the match, winning the contest with a thunderous ace.

The 2003 US Open champion will now take on Fabio Fognini for a place in the round of 16 after the Italian defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets.
