Andy Murray was pushed by Feliciano Lopez, but eventually prevailed in their third-round showdown. The Brit overcame physical discomfort during the clash, saying: "I was struggling a bit physically and that made it challenging. I was up two sets and a break and should have done better there, but I played well in the tie-breaks and that was the difference.

"He played some really good stuff and served well when he was down. He was able to dictate a lot, win free points and play well at the net. It's the last major event of the year and you want to push through anything physically. I will be out here in the next match giving 100%."

Agnieszka Radwanska beat Jelena Jankovic in straight sets and the No. 2 seed was expecting an attritional battle. She said: "We have played couple of times against each other, and it was always long and tough matches. I was prepared for that. Especially with the hot conditions, you really have to fight more yourself than against the opponent, because today was really hot. I think we are playing a little bit similar. So that's why I think we always play long rallies, long games, long points. We always have to run a lot in our matches.

"Today was really, really hot and humid and also windy. It was tough. But I came prepared for that. I was practicing here before the match and every day was like that. I'm trying to use the ice in the first changeover and trying to stay calm and take the shade as well as much as possible, because it was really hot. I was feeling like I was melting there. But I survived the match."

Serena Williams coasted into the last 16 on Saturday afternoon but dismissed reports she will join Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick into retirement at the end of the US Open. She said: "I can't leave you guys. I love this sport way too much. I need to stay here for tennis."

Ana Ivanovic has a shot at her first grand slam quarter-final in over four years after beating American Sloane Stephens. The former world No. 1 said: "It's not going to be easy. But it's definitely a good chance for me. It's great to be in a position to play for a quarter-final.

"Like I said before the tournament, it would be a big goal of mine. So I really want to put my head down and work hard for that match."

Jack Sock bowed out in four sets to Nicolas Almagro but was delighted with his US Open experience. He said: "It's incredible. I have said it in every interview: In New York, there is not a better place to play tennis. New York for the US Open is definitely the best possible scenario to play tennis. A home crowd and everything with the fans. I mean, that match today, the energy from the crowd was unbelievable. I love playing on that court. It was very intimate. The crowds, the fans were right there into the match. It was a great feeling."
