Laura Robson's astonishing giantkilling run at the US Open came to an end in the fourth round as she was defeated by defending champion Sam Stosur.

The British teenager, who had claimed the scalp of former grand slam champions Kim Clijsters and Li Na to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time, saved eight match points before bowing out with a 6-4 6-4 defeat.

Robson's ferocious groundstrokes have caused real problems for her rivals at Flushing Meadows this week, and the world No. 89 continued where she left off against Li, as she grabbed an early break against the No. 7 seed.

Her serve has been a something of an Achilles heel for Robson, and she squandered the chance to consolidate the break, as a double fault, followed by a pair of wayward groundstrokes saw her collapse from 40-15 to allow Stosur to break back immediately.

A convincing hold from Stosur was answered with a love service game from Robson, sealed with an ace, but some wayward hitting saw her gift the Australian three set points. She saved the first with a monster forehand, but was helpless to stop Stosur wrapping up the opening set.

After a morale-boosting hold early in the second set Robson saw two break points pass her by, and it proved costly as Stosur took advantage of some loose hitting from Robson to grab the break.

Robson continued to fight, staving off five match points on her own serve, before breaking back, but Stosur held her nerve to secure her place in the quarter-finals.

Stosur remains on course for the defence of her title in New York and will face world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the last eight, after the top seed thrashed Anna Tatishvili 6-2 6-2. Azarenka put in a dominant display to ease into the quarter-finals.

Petra Kvitova, meanwhile, suffered something of a shock defeat at the hands of Marion Bartoli. The fifth seed appeared in complete control after taking the first set, but capitulated thereafter, winning just two more games in a 1-6 6-2 6-0 loss.

Maria Sharapova survived a scare from compatriot Nadia Petrova in a fiery evening clash on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The third seed seized the momentum after a rain delay in the third set to claim a 6-1 4-6 6-4 win to set up a showdown with Bartoli.
