Roger Federer has been handed a walkover into the quarter-finals of the US Open as Mardy Fish has withdrawn.

Fish has had problems with his heart this year, he required a procedure in May to treat an accelerated heartbeat, and after failing to practice on Sunday, he informed officials at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center he would not be able to compete.

"I am really sorry for Mardy. I just want to wish him a speedy recovery," Federer said in a statement issued by the tournament. "We all want to see him back on tour soon."

Federer will face Tomas Berdych in the last-eight following his impressive 7-6 6-4 6-1 win over Nicolas Almagro.

Berdych is running into form at the right time and he had too much quality for Almagro. The opening two sets were tight, but Almagro wilted after dropping the second. He surrendered his serve to love at the start of the third and this allowed Berdych to coast through.

Marin Cilic came through a second-set wobble to book his place in the quarter-finals with a 7-5 6-4 6-0 win over Martin Klizan.

Cilic dropped his serve on two occasions in the second set, but Klizan failed to take advantage and after surrendering his serve weakly in the 10th game he wilted against the No. 12 seed.
