Djokovic through as Wawrinka retires

Defending champion Novak Djokovic remains the man to beat as he cruised into the quarter-finals of the US Open with a 6-4 6-1 3-1 win over Stanislas Wawrinka.

Wawrinka has a range of weapons at his disposal and has the potential to be a top-ten player, but he was completely outclassed by Djokovic who was in total control when Wawrinka retired mid-way through the third set.

Djokovic came back on court following the overnight rain delay a break to the good and he doubled that advantage with a second break. The world No. 2 was not faultless and he too was broken on two occasions in the opening set, but Wawrinka never looked comfortable behind his own delivery and a forehand error on set point handed the set to Djokovic.

Wawrinka's wins over Alexandr Dolgopolov, Steve Darcis and Sergiy Stakhovsky in the previous rounds were flooded with aces, but he never found any rhythm on serve and this forced him to go for more off the ground. This only served to play into the hands of Djokovic who returned the ball with interest.

The Wawrinka error count mounted in the second and he gifted the set to Djokovic with a shocking forehand error, sending the ball wide with the majority of the court at his mercy.

Wawrinka called the doctor and trainer on court after dropping his serve at the start of the third set. It did not look to be a muscular injury, but he appeared a little dazed and only played one more game before offering his hand.

Philipp Kohlschreiber's fine run at the US Open is over, as he fell in straight sets to the No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic who triumphed 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2.
