Roger Federer feels the shine has been taken off his glorious summer by a quarter-final defeat to Tomas Berdych at the US Open on Wednesday.

Federer won Wimbledon during July and returned to the world No. 1 ranking, and was expected to reach at least the final at Flushing Meadows.

The Swiss player is a five-time US Open champion, and defeat to Berdych means he has failed to earn a semi-final spot at the tournament for the first time since 2003.

Following Berdych's 7-6(1) 6-4 3-6 6-3 triumph, a downcast Federer made no attempt to conceal his frustration.

"I've got to go back to the drawing board right now and see what is the priority [for the rest of the year]," Federer said. "I've said it 100 times: It's been amazing - I'm back to No. 1, I won Wimbledon, but we don't need to talk too much about that right now. I lost the match. A very disappointing match for me.

"I should come in here with tons of energy [he had a walkover in the fourth round against Mardy Fish], ready to go, but who knows? If you get that day in, that match with Fish, [it's] maybe more confidence, who knows? Maybe that was something that the first two matches didn't give me enough. I don't know."

Federer is guaranteed to remain world No. 1 even if Novak Djokovic, the No. 2, triumphs at the US Open. Djokovic is the defending champion and so cannot gain any ranking points.

Berdych will face Britain's Andy Murray in the semi-finals.
