The Serena Williams express train powered into the final of the US Open, with Sara Errani torn apart in straight sets 6-1 6-2.

Williams dropped just 16 games during her passage to the semi-finals and that never looked like being seriously added to as Errani found the power of Williams too much.

Williams has looked imperious over the past fortnight, working out a host of different puzzles and it was no different against Errani as she showed great patience in the face of the Italian's lack of power. Rather than teeing off at the wrong ball, Williams kept her powder dry before picking her moment to unleash her awesome weight of shot.

The tone was set in Errani's opening service game as Williams waited and waited, probing for an opening before setting herself and slamming the ball away for a winner.

The tactic worked as she powered through the opening set in 30 minutes - with Errani only narrowly avoiding the bagel.

Errani has broken through in singles this year, having been better known as a doubles player, and she looked like she could have done with a partner to combat the power hitting of Williams.

The Italian was keen to get into rallies and build her way into the game, but the tactic was hugely flawed as Williams flashed winners at will.

There were few unforced errors from the Errani racket, nine in all, but such a low-risk strategy did not test Williams who coasted through the second set to set up a clash with Victoria Azarenka in the final.
