Heather Watson failed to build on Andy Murray's success on Monday, losing to Mona Barthel at the Bell Challenge.

Watson has seen Laura Robson emerge as the leading British female prospect in recent weeks, following her run to the fourth round of the US Open.

Robson sent shockwaves through Flushing Meadows when she defeated Li Na and Kim Clijsters, both grand slam champions.

In contrast, Watson was eliminated in the opening round of the year's final major - and she also fell at the first hurdle in Quebec against Barthel.

Barthel, the world No. 36, won 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-1 in two hours and 38 minutes.
