Serena Williams is set to make her comeback from injury at the Italian Open on May 3 after she was granted a wildcard for the tournament.

World No.1 Williams has been sidelined by a knee complaint since winning the Australian Open in January.

She was due to make a comeback at the Family Circle Cup, which began on Monday, but withdrew in order to allow her knee more time to heal.

Instead her return will come at the Italian Open - which Williams last won in 2002 - as she begins her clay-court campaign ahead of the French Open.

Nine of the world's top ten women will compete in Rome, with the exception of Sony Ericsson Open winner Kim Clijsters.
