Maria Sharapova progressed unscathed at the China Open, but Serbian pair Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic tumbled at the third round stage.

Second seed Sharapova faced a single break point as she eased into the third round with a 6-2 6-2 win over Sorana Cirstea. The Russian will face Polona Hercog in the third round after the Slovenian defeated Ekaterina Makarova 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(3).

Eleventh seed Ana Ivanovic made just 46 per cent of her first serves as she was broken five times in a 6-4 6-3 defeat to Romina Oprandi. The Swiss awaits a potential quarter-final clash against top seed Victoria Azarenka, should the world No. 1 make it past Elena Vesnina.

Ivanovic's compatriot Jelena Jankovic also failed to reach the quarter-finals after she was beaten in straight sets by Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro. In a match featuring 16 breaks of serve, it was the Spaniard who made the most of her chances as she completed a 7-5 6-4 win.

The world No. 46 will now face Marion Bartoli in the last eight after the ninth seed defeated Julia Goerges 6-3 7-6(2).

Agnieszka Radwanska also survived a scare as she was forced to come from behind to defeat Lourdes Dominguez Lino. The third seed dropped the opening set but recovered to claim a 2-6 6-1 6-4 victory to reach the quarter-finals.
