Watson and Stosur reach second round in Osaka
Heather Watson kept up the pressure for the British No. 1 spot as she moved into the second round at the HP Open with a straight sets win over Polona Hercog.
World No. 71 Watson enjoyed real success on Hercog's serve as she forged 10 break points, converting three, to score a 6-4 6-4 victory in Osaka.
Watson, who trails doubles partner Laura Robson in the rankings, took a single break of serve to snatch the opening set before breaking twice in the second to secure victory in an hour and 29 minutes.
Watson will be expecting to face sixth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues in the round of 16, providing the Spaniard can safely navigate her way past Italian Camila Giorgi - while Robson, seeded for the first time in a WTA event, will face Eleni Daniilidou in her opener on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, top seed Sam Stosur defeated home hope Erika Sema 6-4 6-2 to move into the second round.
The Australian, who won the event back in 2009, hit five aces and converted five of six break point opportunities to progress unscathed at the Utsubo Tennis Center.
There was no joy for Japanese fans on Monday as Ayumi Morita also fell with a 6-3 6-2 defeat to Jamie Hampton, while Kimiko Date-Krumm lost 3-6 6-3 6-4 to Casey Dellacqua.
