Andy Murray will kick off the defence of his Shanghai Masters title against Florian Mayer after the German thrashed Bernard Tomic on Tuesday.

Mayer needed just 45 minutes to dispatch his opponent 6-4 6-0 after a disappointing second-set performance from the Australian.

After losing a competitive opening set, Tomic capitulated, winning just eight points as Mayer streaked to victory to set up a second-round meeting with Murray.

The world No. 3 won their only previous encounter in three sets at last year's Rome Masters.

No. 15 seed Gilles Simon is a possible third round opponent for Murray after the Frenchman set up a second-round clash with Alexandr Dolgopolov following a 6-4 6-2 win over Jurgen Melzer.

Newly-crowned Japan Open champion Kei Nishikori showed no signs of a hangover as he reached the second round with a 6-2 6-4 victory over China's Wu Di.

Milos Raonic, the man Nishikori beat in the Tokyo final, bounced back with a 7-6(4) 6-3 win over Marinko Matoservic. The No. 12 seed will face Marcos Baghdatis in the second round after the Cypriot defeated Fabio Fognini 6-2 6-2.

In the battle of the veterans, Radek Stepanek claimed his first career victory over Lleyton Hewitt. Stepanek, 33, had never beaten the former world No. 1 in three previous encounters, but claimed a 7-5 6-1 result to seal a second round clash with France's Richard Gasquet.

Stanislas Wawrinka won two tight sets to defeat Albert Ramos 7-6(1) 7-6(5), while there were also wins for Viktor Troicki and Denis Istomin, who beat Mikhail Youzhny and Carlos Berlocq respectively.

John Isner triumphed in the battle of the big servers to reach the third round with a 7-6(3) 6-7(8) 7-6(7) victory over Kevin Anderson. In other second round action, Marin Cilic beat Martin Klizan 7-5 6-1, while Fernando Verdasco ousted seventh seed Juan Monaco 6-4 6-2.
