Murray into third round after Mayer withdrawal

Defending champion Andy Murray is into the third round of the Shanghai Masters without picking up a tennis racket after the world No. 3 profited from Florian Mayer's withdrawal.

Murray, who had a bye in the first round, was due to play Mayer on Wednesday, but the German pulled out with a rib injury.

The Scot will now meet Alexandr Dolgopolov for a place in the quarter-finals after the Ukrainian ousted Gilles Simon 6-3 6-4. Murray has never lost to Dolgopolov in three previous appearances.

Murray, who ended Britain's 76-year wait for a male singles grand slam champion at the US Open last month, is hoping to end a stellar 2012 on a high.

Roger Federer has backed Murray to top the world rankings, but although the Brit believes he is capable of becoming the best player on the ATP Tour, he claims he will have to wait until 2013 before he can become world No. 1.
