Novak Djokovic outgunned Feliciano Lopez in the serving stakes to lay the platform for a smooth progression to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters on Thursday.

Djokovic, who entered the tournament off the back of his third China Open triumph last week, hit 12 aces to the three produced by Lopez - who relies heavily upon his delivery. With that threat nullified, the world No. 2 then made light work of securing a 6-3 6-3 victory.

The first set was highly impressive from Djokovic, who dropped five points on serve and had the more variable toolkit when manoeuvring the ball around the court. He only broke once, but that was all he needed to secure the set.

Lopez did produce the odd flash of brilliance, a stretching forehand winner deep to the baseline earning the applause of the crowd in the fourth game, but that only helped him to 40-15 down on the Djokovic serve, which summed up the Serb's complete control.

Djokovic's third break of the match completed the win, and he will now meet Tommy Haas who beat Janko Tipsarevic 6-2 6-1 in 66 minutes.

Earlier in the day, a big-hitting quarter-final between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych was booked, after they beat Marcos Baghdatis and Sam Querrey respectively.

Tsonga was the more comfortable of the pair, seeing off Baghdatis 6-2 7-6(2) in an hour and 21 minutes. Berdych needed much longer to overcome Querrey, eventually winning 6-2 6-7(3) 6-4.
