World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka has hailed Heather Watson's first WTA title as a testament to the Briton's marked improvement this season.

Watson ended Great Britain's 24-year wait for a WTA champion with victory at the HP Open in Osaka, Japan, beating Chang Kai-Chen 7-5 5-7 7-6(4) in the final.

Azarenka faced Watson twice early in the 2012 season, routing the Guernsey native on both occasions, but admitted to being impressed with Watson's attitude and game even in defeat.

"In the career cycle of a tennis player you never know when it is going to happen for you, you are always trying to find ways to get better," Azarenka told the Times.

"I have seen that Heather has progressed week by week. I admired her attitude when she played me, she didn't get down on herself, she fought for each ball and that's what you need to have."

Watson regained her British No. 1 ranking and broke into the world's top 50 on the back of the biggest week of her career to date, but Azarenka believes there is more to come from the 20-year-old.

"It is moments like the one she enjoyed yesterday that make the journey seem so worthwhile. It is great to see someone new in the game making their mark," the 23-year-old added.

"I saw her play against Maria Sharapova in Japan last week and there were signs again that she isn't intimidated by anybody. Winning your first title is an incredible achievement."
