Novak Djokovic looks set to end the year as world No. 1 for a second successive season after Roger Federer announced he would not be defending his Paris Masters title.

Federer, who was denied a sixth Swiss Indoors title by Juan Martin Del Potro at his home event on Sunday, said he needed a week to rest ahead of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

''It's the only right decision for me,'' he said. ''I had some niggling stuff and I didn't want to take a chance obviously before the World Tour Finals. I need some time to prepare.''

Federer, who won in Basel, Paris and London last season, will begin a record 302nd week at the top of the world rankings on Monday, but risks losing that status to Djokovic in the final two weeks of the season with the Serb having fewer points to defend.

Federer will be replaced in the main draw by lucky loser Victor Hanescu, while the season finale in London's O2 Arena begins on November 5.
