David Ferrer will bid to get defending champions Spain off to a winning start when he takes on Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek in the opening rubber of the Davis Cup final on Friday.

Tomas Berdych will meet Nicolas Almagro in the second match at Prague's O2 Arena, where the Czechs have laid a medium-fast hard court in a bid to counter the Spaniards' clay-court prowess.

Czech captain Jaroslav Navratil has named Ivo Minar and Lukas Rosol for Saturday's doubles, but Berdych and Stepanek could be called upon to face Marc Lopez and Marcel Granollers, winners at the ATP World Tour finals earlier this week.

World No. 5 Ferrer and world No. 6 Berdych will go head-to-head on Sunday in the reverse singles, by which time the final rubber between Stepanek and Almagro could be rendered meaningless.

Spain are bidding to win the trophy for a fourth time in five years, while Czech Republic are chasing an historic double - if they lift the trophy this weekend they will be the first nation since the USA in 1990 to win both the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup in the same season.
