Laura Robson has been rewarded for her superb efforts in the second half of the year by being named WTA Newcomer of the Year.

Robson has long been tipped for big things, having won junior Wimbledon at the age of 14. Now 18, she had a tough first couple of years on the professional circuit, but came of age in the second half of the season.

She ran through to the semi-finals in Palermo and claimed a silver medal in the doubles at the Olympics, but it was at the US Open that she announced herself on the world stage with a run to the fourth round of the US Open. She sent Kim Clijsters into retirement with a brilliant display and also took out Li Na.

Robson also reached the final in Guangzhou in September - which propelled her to 53 in the year-end world rankings.

"It is a huge honour to have won the 2012 WTA Newcomer Of The Year award," Robson said. "I looked at the list of past winners and it's certainly a very impressive line-up that includes many of my idols growing up; I hope that I can go on to achieve close to what many of the past winners have achieved in their careers.

"2012 has been a very enjoyable year for me and I look forward to building on the progress that I have made in 2012 and the season ahead."
