First-round losers at the 2013 Australian Open are set for a pay increase of nearly 30 per cent after organisers confirmed the prize money for players beaten in the opening round would be at least 27,000 Australian Dollars.

The biggest percentage increases of the $30 million prize money will go to the players eliminated over the first three rounds.

Tournament director Craig Tiley told the Melbourne Age that winners of this week's wildcard play-off could expect to earn "above $27,000" for playing in the opening grand slam of the season, which begins on January 14.

It follows in the wake of a move by Wimbledon organisers to award a 26% pay increase to first-round losers last season.

In 2012, players who lost in the first round at Melbourne Park received $20,800.
