Andrea Petkovic is a doubt for the Australian Open after she suffered a knee injury in action for Germany in the Hopman Cup.

The former world No. 9 won the opening set against Australia's Ashleigh Barty 6-4, but was forced to throw in the towel, unable to continue with a right knee injury.

Petkovic's withdrawal meant Australia were handed a 6-0 6-0 win in the mixed doubles, giving the hosts a 3-0 victory in Perth after Bernard Tomic defeated Tommy Haas 7-6(6) 3-6 7-5.

Spain were also winners on the opening day of competition as Anabel Medina Garrigues and Fernando Verdasco combined in the doubles to seal a 2-1 victory over South Africa.

Kevin Anderson had beaten Verdasco 7-6(5) 6-4 in the opening rubber before Garrigues levelled proceedings with a 6-4 6-2 win over Chanelle Scheepers.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is headed for Perth following his victory at the Mubadala Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. He will pair up with fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic.
