Jo-Wilfried Tsonga failed to steer France to an opening victory at the Hopman Cup as his singles win was in vain after they were beaten 2-1 by Spain.

Tsonga got France off to a flying start as he defeated Fernando Verdasco 7-5 6-3, but the Spaniards fought back through Anabel Medina Garrigues, who beat Mathilde Johansson 6-3 6-2.

In the decisive doubles, Verdasco and Medina Garrigues combined once again to good effect to seal a 6-3 6-3 victory make it two wins from two after their opening victory against South Africa.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams and John Isner combined to win their doubles match to secure a 2-1 victory for United States over South Africa.

Williams rallied to defeat Chanelle Scheepers 4-6 6-2 6-3 before Kevin Anderson levelled the scores with a 7-6(0) 7-6(5) victory against Isner. The tie came down to the doubles, which the American duo won 6-3 6-2.
