British No. 1 Heather Watson has emerged as an injury doubt for the Australian Open after withdrawing from next week's Hobart International.

Watson was beaten in three sets by Kiki Bertens in the second round of the ASB Classic in Auckland and she revealed following that match that she had picked up an elbow injury.

The problem has been assessed and Watson has been advised to swerve the Hobart International

She tweeted: "I injured my elbow yesterday in my singles match, unfortunately I have to withdraw from Hobart. Doing everything I can to get healthy."

The Australian Open, the season's first grand slam, gets underway in Melbourne on January 14.
