Andy Murray has been named the third seed for the forthcoming Australian Open in Melbourne.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has been handed the top seed, with Roger Federer second on the list for the opening grand slam of the 2013 season, which gets underway on January 14.

In the women's draw, defending champion Victoria Azarenka has been awarded the top ranking - with Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams the second and third seeds respectively.

With Rafael Nadal - last year's losing finalist - missing this year's event due to injury, David Ferrer is elevated to fourth in the seedings, with Agnieszka Radwanska the Spaniard's opposite number in the female draw.

The full draw for the tournament is made on Friday.
