Xavier Malisse showed he still has something left in the tank at the Heineken Open, as he dumped out seventh seed Martin Klizan in three sets.

On a good day for Belgian players, Malisse held his nerve to oust the world no. 30 7-6(4) 3-6 6-2 - as compatriot Olivier Rochus also caused something of a surprise in his 6-2 5-7 6-2 triumph over Spain's Albert Ramos.

It was a great result for last year's finalist in this event, although a clean sweep for Belgian players was denied after youngster David Goffin was outclassed by Thomasz Bellucci, 7-6(5) 6-2.

In the day's other first round match, Brian Baker dumped out fifth seed Jerzy Janowicz - the American showing great resolve to complete a 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4 success.

Meanwhile, at the Apia International in Sydney, seeds Florian Mayer and Marcel Granollers both progressed after victories over Joao Sousa and Matthew Ebden respectively.

Denis Istomin also rolled on after a third set tiebreak triumph against wildcard James Duckworth - with Julian Benneteau joining him in the second round after edging Pablo Andujar 6-3 5-7 6-2.
