Federer happy to mix things up

Roger Federer was too good for Benoit Paire and he took the opportunity to try some different things, including a forehand chip and charge. He said: "When you're in the lead, you feel better, you feel less pressure, you try a few things to see if those works and then you have options up your sleeve.

"I'm obviously very happy with this first-round match, so total control. He can be a tricky opponent, but I guess his playing style doesn't disturb me that much overall. I'm happy I was able to play a clean match out there today."

Serena Williams overcame a nasty scare when turning her ankle to progress to the second round and she has no intention of pulling out.

"I think I was really, really close to panicking because a very similar thing happened to me last year, almost on the same side, the same shot," Williams said. "So I almost panicked, and I thought, I can't do that. I just have to really remain calm and think things through.

"I'll be out there. I mean, unless something fatal happens to me, there's no way I'm not going to be competing. I'm alive. My heart's beating. I'll be fine.

"I have a day to work on it. At this point it's not a lot of time. But I'm not 18 years old where I want to sit this one out or I don't have to run to the forehand. I feel like with my experience, I feel like I've gone through a lot, and that I just have to mentally adapt. I've been able to mentally adapt to a lot of things. You know, I think it will be a good challenge and almost a good game for me to mentally adapt to this."

Caroline Wozniacki battled back from the brink to beat Sabine Lisicki in three sets and was happy to get over the line. She said: "I'm just happy to be through to the next round. Today I had to get my fighting spirit up, and fight back, and it paid off. It's a new year, it's a new tournament, and that's basically all I think about. It's a tough first round opponent, you never know what you can expect. She can hit some amazing winners and then do some unforced errors straight after. She has a big serve, so you just need to be on your toes all the time."

Victoria Azarenka beat Monica Niculescu 6-1 6-4 and the world No. 1 admits it was a tough puzzle to solve. She said: "She's unusual and she tries to make you feel a little bit, you know, miserable on the court, like you don't know what to do, because every ball comes from different angles. It's important to keep your focus. I was trying to execute my shots, not really worried about what she's going to bring out, you know, because sometimes I don't think she knows where she's going."

Kimiko Date-Krumm crushed Nadia Petrova and in so doing, the 42-year-old became the oldest woman to win a match in the Open era at the Australian Open. "Of course I'm very happy to win today, but I don't play for the record," Date-Krumm said. "Even (if I) lose, I'm still enjoying."
