Federer imperious in win over Davydenko

Roger Federer cantered into the third round of the Australian Open with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win over Nikolay Davydenko.

An in-form Davydenko looked a potential threat to Federer but he was completely outclassed by the former world No. 1 who did not concede a single break point opportunity and the pressure proved too much for the Russian.

The pattern of play was set early on as Davydekno saved break points in the fourth game. He came under pressure again in the sixth but failed to weather the storm as Federer broke and duly cruised through the remainder of the set.

Federer's movement around the court was supreme and in taking up a dominant position on the baseline he was able to impart real pressure on Davydenko. The Russian was forced to hit for the lines and it resulted in Federer working a break of serve early in the second set.

Davydenko improved behind his own serve after being broken - he sent down seven aces in the second set - but failed to make any inroads on the Federer serve and the Swiss master eased his way into a two-set lead.

For all the good work Davydenko put in towards the end of the second set, he undid it all in the first game of the third by throwing in an awful service game to gift Federer the break.

Federer's dominant position on serve allowed him to breeze through the remainder of the contest, conserving valuable energy in the process.

Bernard Tomic is showing the green shoots of recovery following a torrid spell and he claimed a 6-7(4) 7-5 7-6(3) 7-6(8) win over Daniel Brands to set up a meeting with Federer in the third round.

Juan Martin Del Potro is a potential quarter-final foe for Andy Murray and the Argentine flexed his muscles with 6-2 6-4 6-4 win over Benjamin Becker. Jeremy Chardy will be his third-round opponent following a four-set win over Marcel Granollers.

Richard Gasquet cruised to a three-set win over Alejandro Falla and that could work to his advantage in the third round as his opponent Ivan Dodig needed five sets to beat Jarkko Nieminen.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was pushed hard in the second set but was able to come through and book his place in round three with a 6-3 7-6(1) 6-3 win over Go Soeda. Tsonga is likely to have a fitness advantage over his third-round opponent after Blaz Kavcic beat James Duckworth 10-8 in the fifth set to progress.

Gael Monfils served 29 aces and 23 double faults in his epic five-set win over Lu Yen-hsun. The Frenchman looked up against it when dropping the third set to love to fall 2-1 behind, but he fought back to claim victory 8-6 in the fifth. The final game was not without drama, as he double faulted on four successive match points before getting over the line.

Monfils' reward is a meeting with fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon who was a four-set winner over Jesse Levine.

Philipp Kohlschreiber was another seed pushed hard in the second set, but the German weathered the storm to secure a 6-2 7-6(4) 6-4 win over Amir Weintraub. Milos Raonic will take on Kohlschreiber in the third round following his 7-6(2) 6-2 6-3 win over Lukas Rosol.

Marin Cilic has made steady progress and he advanced with a straight-sets win over Rajeev Ram. He will face Andreas Seppi in round three following the Italian's five-set win over Denis Istomin.
